Time Management Lesson Plan

Course Name:             Adult Roles and Responsibilities
Grade Level:               9th-12th grades
Length of Class           3 class periods that run 70 minutes, re-check 
                                    on changes every two weeks.

Unit:                             Time management

Lesson Name:             How I spend my time

Lesson Goal:               Students should effectively show use of time
                                    and evaluate and re-adjust to correlate with
                                    goals set.

Learning domain:       To understand the importance of time and
                                    managing time to succeed in the goals the 
                                    students set.

Objective:                    Students will be able to:

  • Record a 24 hour period
  • Fill in a time chart
  • Analyze where the student needs to make changes to accomplish what they want in a 24 hour period.

Review: (10 min.)       “Goals and decision making”

Materials for review:    Overhead projector and overhead of the
                                        definitions of short term goals, long term
                                        goals and the steps to make decisions

Transition:                   After reviewing the overhead and having
                                    the students discuss some of their personal
                                    short term and long term goals we move on       
                                    to the objective for the day.

 

Overview: (10 min.)   “Evaluating the importance of time
                                     management.

Materials for overview:      Overhead projector and overhead        
                                              with schedule and quotes about time.

  • Present objectives and Agenda for the day.
  • Explain to the students what the goal is for the day.
  • To get the students thinking about time read the quotes and ask if they have heard of any themselves.

Transition:  Today we will be using the 24 hours that was 
                      recorded for homework. Using the information you
                      will transfer the information to the schedule like the
                      one on the overhead.

Presentation: (20 minutes)

Materials for presentation:  Overhead projector and overhead                
                                                with an example of the time
                                                mangagement information sheet
                                                “How I Spend My Time”, a
                                                 calculator.

  • Begin the presentation with a completed example of a personal record of a 24 hour day.
  • Plot the time in the appropriate spaces on the chart.
  • Calculate the time it would take in a week and a month.
  • Have a discussion if the students agree with the color code of activities and why they may have put an item in a different category.
  • Reflect on how the time was spent and have students suggest schedule changes to utilize time efficiently.

 

Transition:         Today you will be charting your information onto
                             the time recording sheet. You will need to get out
                           red, blue, yellow and purple colored pencils.

Exercise (20 min.)

  • Fill out the information and answer the questions at the end.
  • Compare what is on your personal goal

Sheet.

  • Analyze the information and see what             

                                 needs to be changed in order to accomplish                 
                                 the goals those were set.

  • Develop an action plan on how to reschedule a 24 hour day.

Summary: (10 min.)

    • Discuss with students what they observed was their major time management problem and record they responses on the white board.
    • Explain to the students that they will revisit this type of recording every two weeks to see if their plan of action is going to change to succeed in their set goals, example: maintaining a 3.5 grade point average, lose 20 lbs before track season, spend more quality not quantity time with family and friends.
    • Ask the students if they have any questions or concerns.

    TIME MANAGEMENT - HOW I SPEND MY TIME

     

    1. On a separate piece of paper, keep a record of everything you do for 24 hours (20 points).
    2. Start with 12 AM in the morning and put each hour on a separate line.
    3. For each hour, write what you have done.  Be specific and detailed.
    4. Each hour can have many different activities written down.
    5. 24 HOURS LATER: Count up how many hours were spent doing the following:

    Yellow = School / homework                      Red = TV / computer / phone             Blue = Eating       
    Red= Exercise / sports                 Red = Time with friends                    Red = Time with family                         
    Blue = Sleep                                                  Blue = Personal grooming               Purple = Chores / job
    Red = Hobbies
