It is important when building a website, that you make it equitably accessible to everyone, especially those with diverse abilities. Some sites have certain accessibility barriers that make it hard for certain people to use them. Highly accessible websites increase viewers ratings and better search results.
I learned about alternative text in my web design class. Having this alternative text in the mark up code available for others is very helpful. This allows people that are blind or people that have turned off images on certain computers and phones to access this. Not all users can use mouses, so it is very helpful to others to build a website that you can access using other devices such as speech input. The WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) is a great place to go to for more helpful hints and ideas to make your website more accessible and user-friendly.
