Text A Course in Mathematical Biology by De Vries, et. al.

General: The prerequisite for this class is Math 374, Differential Equations, and a computer programming course. You are responsible for all material in the text and all material presented in class. This includes any material not in the text and all material in the text that is not presented in class. A list of topics will be available.

There is a fee for this class. "The fee assessed on this class is to defray the costs of providing class materials, including class notes, handouts, or other duplicated materials. Some classes have an additional fee to supply specialized computer software and/or classroom sets of teaching aids and supplies."

It is expected that you will spend at least 2 to 3 hours outside class for every hour in class. Even though roll will not be taken, you are expected to attend all classes. A list of expectations may be available.

You are expected to follow the policy on Academic Integrity in the catalog. Any violations will be forwarded to Student Judicial Affairs.

The last day to withdraw is November 3, 2008.

Homework: A list of problems to work will be on this web site. All of the homework will be collected. Not all of the problems will be graded. If you have any questions about problems, please ask them in class or in office hours.
Maple: I will be using Maple for demonstrations and preparing class materials. It is recommended that you use Maple for some of the work in this class.
Computer Work: Some of the class periods may be spent in the computer lab. The lab schedule will be announced later. We will be using Maple as the prefered environment for modeling.  You may use another program for modeling, however you must make your work accessible for your instructor and your classmates.
Projects: Each student will do a modeling project throughout the semester.  You must have an approved topic and basic outline by the middle of the semester.  Written versions of the projects will be due December 1, 2006.
Exams: Two tests will be given. The first exam will be on September __ and the second exam will probably be given on October __.
Final: The final exam will be given on Monday December 8, 2008 from 10:15 to 12:15. It will be comprehensive.
Grading Policy: Points will be distributed as follows: Exams 15%, Final 25%, Projects 20%, Homework and Computer Assignments 25%.

An approximate (really a guess) scale is 50% C, 65% B, 85% A. This will probably change depending on actual homework and test scores.
