Moving in Foster Care: The Perspective of Foster Alumni

This qualitative research project aimed to better understand the placement move experience from the perspective of adults who experienced foster care placement moves during childhood. Kristin Putney, Master of Social Work (MSW) student and Foster Parent was the project coordinator, Alexsis Ruthenbeck, MSW student was the research assistant. The details of the study are outlined in the project brochure. Interviews for this project ended in May 2006. A total of 22 interviews were completed.

Moving in Foster Care: The Perspective of Foster Parents

This survey research project is a follow up to the above project. The purpose of this second project is to better understand the placement move experience from the perspective of foster parents. Kristin Putney, Master of Social Work (MSW) student and Foster Parent and Sarah Font, BSW student are research research assistants. In April and May 2007, surveys were sent to a random selection of nearly 500 foster parents across the state of Michigan. The results of the survey will be analyzed and presented in 2007-08.

A Study of Foster Parent Training for Traumatized Children

This project is supported by a grant from the Faculty Research and Ceative Activities Support Fund, Western Michigan University. The goal of the study is to conduct an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of the Fostering Traumatized Children (FTC) training program offered by Southwest Michigan's Children's Trauma Assessment Center (CTAC) Investigating FTC’s effectiveness in this project will be a first step in CTACs efforts to build the evidence-base of its training program. The major hypothesis of this project is that foster parents who receive CTAC’s Fostering Traumatized Children (FTC) training program will report better outcomes when compared to foster parents who do not receive the training. Five foster-parent related outcome areas are examined over a 3-month time period: (1) improved emotional reactions to problem behaviors, (2) increased self-efficacy in managing problem behaviors, (3) gains in knowledge of complex trauma, (4) more placement stability, and (5) better foster parent retention. The project will be carried out in the 2007-08 academic year.
