2)What is meant by artifacts, features, ecofacts, sites?
3)Why is it important to look at a region for archeological explanation of a site? What is a region and a site anyway?
4)What is meant by Middle Range Theory? How are artifacts and/or ecofacts transformed?
5)Why is sampling a useful strategy? How should it be carried out?
Readings Week 5:
1)What constitutes a region? Why is it useful to look at regions in order to understand what is happening at a site, rather than focus simply on an individual site?
2)How do various forms of remote sensing help us archeologically?
3)What is meant by aerial photoraphy,thermography, radar imaging satellite imaging? How do they help archeological investigations? How useful are subsurface means of testing:auguring, magnetometry, resistivity, ground-penetrating radar?
Readings Week 6 (first half):Excavating sites
1)What are strata, stratigraphy? What explains the appearance of strata within a site? What is the law of superimposition?
2)Understand the Harris Matrix. In what ways is it useful?
3)Understand the terms sample coverage and total coverage, penetrating excavations, sondage (or sounding or test pit), step trench, clearing excavation, area excavation, stripping excavation.
4)How does one assure the recording of provenience of data collected? What kinds of tools and materials does one need?
