The Yousef Alavi Memorial Symposium

Each year Western Michigan’s Department of Mathematics celebrates Emeriti Day with a colloquium and dinner honoring our retired colleagues.  This year we are expanding the activities for this event into a symposium to remember our dear friend Yousef Alavi, and also to acknowledge the 100th birthday of Paul Erdös. 

The schedule for the Alavi Symposium will be Thursday October 24, 2:00—5:00 and Friday, October 25, 10:00—12:00 and 2:00—5:00.  We will feature a colloquium by Fan Chung on Thursday and another colloquium by Ron Graham on Friday. The program will also have invited speakers including Lowell Beineke, Ralph Faudree, Ronald Gould, Jerrold Grossman, Linda Lesniak, Allen Schwenk, and Ping Zhang. Events will take place primarily in the Alavi Commons Room on the sixth floor of Everett Tower. A complete schedule can be found on the math department webpage, www.wmich.edu/math/ and here. The Graham lecture at 4:00-5:00 Friday will be in the Putney Auditorium of the Fetzer Center. The evening events will continue at the Fetzer Center with a reception from 5:15-6:15 followed by the Emeriti Dinner.
